TRINITY WELLBEING ARTICLE - DEALING WITH DISAPPOINTMENT
Dealing with Disappointment
Disappointment is a natural part of life that we have all experienced and will continue to experience regularly as adults. Young people are often still building resilience, and as a result, disappointment can cause them to have strong emotional responses that take time to resolve. Young people are also prone to putting all their hopes into something working out perfectly, so when it doesn’t, it can be hard for them to get back up and try again. While we can’t avoid disappointment altogether, there are things we can do for ourselves and our young people that make dealing with disappointment a little bit easier.
Label and validate emotions
Young people may act out when they are feeling disappointed. With disappointment comes feelings of sadness, anger, frustration and more. Supporting your young person to label how they are feeling helps to validate their emotions and identify the root cause. Once disappointment is established as the underlying emotion, it is easier to understand why they are acting out. Encourage them to talk about the disappointing event and empathise with their feelings. Remember, what may not seem like a big deal to adults can be for young people and it is important to respect that.
Use positive coping strategies and redirect focus
You know your young person best, including what works for them when they are feeling down. Encourage them to use positive coping strategies to help them to feel better. This may be hobbies such as sport or art, watching a movie with the family, journalling or spending time with friends. Taking part in these activities helps to redirect their focus away from the disappointment and allows them to have fun and start to feel better.
Find the lesson
As the saying goes, if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. Remind your young person that success is not immediate, and their effort and persistence is important. When they are ready to try again, help them to find the lesson in the disappointment. This may be a discussion about what they learnt last time, what they might do differently this time, or a simple statement about how you are proud they are trying again and can see how the lesson of disappointment has helped them to grow.
Take care of yourself and be a guide
Remember that sometimes things in your young person’s life are out of your control, including when and what causes disappointment, and their reactions to these moments. When you care so much about someone, it is difficult to see them struggle, and it is easy to want to step in and protect them every step of the way. But doing this does not build resilience, which is important for success later in life. Being a guide, not a fixer, helps to build the resilience and problem-solving skills of your young person.
It is also important for your own wellbeing to step back. We know that disappointment is unavoidable, and you can’t completely protect your child from it, but you can support them when it comes around. Remember to take care of yourself and practice self-care.
WIGS 4 KIDS FUNDRAISER: CHARLOTTE BARAGRY
We will celebrate our Trinity Feast Day on the last day of this term. There will be a prayer reflection, sporting activities and a concert in the afternoon. Charlotte Baragry will be having her hair cut to raise funds for CareFlight, the Australian Life-Saving Aeromedical Charity. This is a charity which is very important to Charlotte’s family. Charlotte is raising funds in memory of my brother, Max. Her goal is to reach $3500 with her ponytails donated to the Kids with Cancer organisation to make a wig for ‘Wigs 4 Kids’.
ST VINCENT DE PAUL WINTER APPEAL 2022
It's that time of year again when the weather turns, and we need to consider our brothers and sisters in the community who are without enough warmth for the winter.
Trinity Catholic College will be commencing the Vinnie's Winter Appeal in Week 9 and we are seeking donations of:
- blankets
- towels
- bed sheets (single and double sizes)
to help the Goulburn Conference of St Vincent de Paul to supply families in need. While this initiative will run into Weeks 2-3 of Term 3, we encourage as many donations in Weeks 9 and 10 this term as possible so we can provide warmth during the two week school break which will be in the heart of winter.
The Catholic Social Teachings of Dignity of the Human Person, Preferential Option for the Poor and Solidarity come to the fore with this social justice initiative to give what we can, that we may help others in our community and allow them to live with dignity.
Australian Catholics Online
Trinity Catholic College is fortunate to have a parental subscription to Australian Catholics online. There are valuable resources for families that link into all aspects of faith and Catholic mission, such as information, articles, reviews and games. Parents can access the digital version of the quarterly magazine for free using the login details below.
Australian Catholics seeks to bring a sense of our global Catholic mission into the homes of Australian families.
Our goal is to give families a sense that they not only belong to a school or parish community, but to a community that extends across the globe and through the centuries.
"Australian Catholics provides a valuable link between the Church and everyday life for thousands of Catholics. It is the only Catholic magazine available for many Australian families today and as such it plays a vital role in the spread of Catholic values." SCHOOL TV: CELEBRATING NAIDOC WEEK
SPECIAL REPORT: Celebrating NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to recognise and learn more about the history and culture of indigenous communities.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, when on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Today, it is a week-long celebration held in July that consists of range of traditional and contemporary activities.
NAIDOC Week is an important event that helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. It enables a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities. NAIDOC week is an opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future. Families are encouraged to join in and support young people in learning the significance of NAIDOC Week.
This Special Report offers suggestions on how families can celebrate NAIDOC Week together. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.

We need your help!
CUC are looking to build a program that builds aspirations of young people in our local area to access university and further education. We are looking for three students and their families to represent Trinity in 1-2 consultation/community engagement events to investigate the challenges local students face in pursuing higher education. You can be a younger student with your family who thinks they might like to go but don't know how you would because accommodation or fees make it hard, you can be an older student and family who is in senior years looking at applications and where to apply to or thinking it's too difficult to aspire to because of a range of reasons. We want to hear from you!
When would these events happen? Week 3 of Term 3.
If you are interested or would like to contribute to this consultation/community engagement event, please email naomi.gill@cg.catholic.edu.au
The College should be notified of any foreseen student leave. An Application for Exemption Form is available from the College Office and is required to be completed by parents/carers and returned to the College at least 10 school days prior to any leave. Leave or travel over 10 days requires a different form; please contact Reception. If, during the period of leave, your child has assessments due they should also complete the Notification of Planned Absence form which is in the appendix of their student assessment handbook.
When your child needs to leave School early, please make sure they complete the following steps:
1. A written note signed from their parent/carer. This note can be made in the Student diary on the day of the planned absence, or on a separate piece of paper.
2. The student then takes the note to Homeroom and asks their Homeroom teachers to sign it.
3. The note must also be signed by a House Coordinator.
4. The student comes to the front office with their signed note.
5. Front office staff assist student to sign out.
6. Students wait for parent/carer to collect them.
Please note, parent or carer MUST present to the Office to collect student.
WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!
We love to hear about our students' achievements, so please feel free to send through any information about your child's achievements to info.tccg@cg.catholic.edu.au by Tuesday of each week. We look forward to hearing from you! Also, be sure to visit our facebook site!
