TRINITY WELLBEING TALK - STUDENT & FAMILY COUNSELLOR
The Power of Being Calm
In our busy lives it can be rare to find time to be in a quiet, calm headspace. Often once one thing finishes, we are already thinking of the next thing to do. This is also common for teens and young people who sometimes don’t stop until they lay their head down to sleep, and even then, can have racing thoughts and lots on their mind. There is nothing wrong with being busy, but when teens and children feel big emotions, finding a sense of calm can really help.
Why is Calmness Important?
Having a sense of calm has many benefits for us and those around us, including:
- Protecting our physical health by helping us to sleep better and hold less tension in our body
- Allowing us to stop and think things through clearly
- Giving our nervous system a chance to reset
- Allowing us to feel big emotions and let them pass in a healthy way
- Encouraging us to recover from busy periods and stressful events
- Improving our patience with ourselves and others
Ways to Be Calm
Each of us are different, and so are the ways that make us calm. You may already know what helps you to reset and relax, or you may like to try new strategies to have under your belt. It is important to give yourself time every day to slow down, relax and take care of yourself, and encourage young people to do the same. Some ideas include:
- Self-care: going for a walk and listening to music, reading, watching a movie with family or friends, or taking part in prayer or meditation
- Deep breathing: this website offers strategies for deep breathing, and information about its benefits https://www.everydayhealth.com/alternative-health/living-with/ways-practice-breath-focused-meditation/
- Time in nature without electronics: when we are on our phones, watching TV or on the computer, we are not listening to our body and what it needs. Spending 10 minutes outside with a cuppa, or going for an electronic-free walk are some great ways to find calm in your day
- Alone time: this may not be easy to find, but 5 minutes alone to reset, practice the above calming techniques, and take a breath, is an important thing to do for yourself and those around you. Young people should also get comfortable with spending some time alone practicing calmness, as this is a skill that will help them throughout life to find balance when things are busy.
Finding Calm with Big Feelings
It is unrealistic to think that we can always keep our cool, and we can’t expect young people who are still learning to regulate emotions to be able to do that either. “Big feelings” such as anger, worry, sadness and high energy can cause stress and even conflict. When young people are experiencing these strong emotions, it is important to stay calm, because if you are heightened in your response, it can cause their emotions to increase.
Some phrases that help to calm the situation are:
- “I hear you”
- “This is a big feeling”
- “I’m right here”
- “I’m listening”
- “I’m here to help you”
- “It’s okay to cry”
- “I’m not going anywhere, let’s do some big breaths together”
The upcoming holidays are a really great time to practice making time for calmness in your routine. Give yourself and your children permission to rest, reset, and create healthy habits.

The Archbishop is responsible for the oversight of all Catholic Schools within the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn. The Catholic Education Commission (CEC) was established to support and advise the Archbishop in his responsibilities for Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. The Catholic Education Commission is seeking expressions of interest from parishioners and community members who may be interested in becoming a member. UNWELL STUDENTS
If students are displaying flu-like symptoms at school, parents will be required to collect their child from school and have a COVID test. If students are unwell, they must remain at home. Please continue to inform the front office via phone 4821 3600 or via email absences.tccg@cg.catholic.edu.au if your child tests positive for COVID.
HOUSEHOLD CONTACTS
Parents are required to follow NSW Health directions when their child is deemed a household close contact and must notify the school to advise they are a household contact. It is strongly recommended that if a student is a household contact, they study from home where it is practical to do so. A household contact must wear a face mask in any indoor setting that is not their own home, if they are aged 12 years and over. Only students in Years 7 to 12 will be required to wear a mask when attending school if they are a houshold contact. Where a student attends school they must undertake a COVID test prior to returning to school and then each day for 5 days and may only attend a school if they have no symptoms.

An Application for Exemption Form is available from the College Office and is required to be completed by parents/carers and returned to the College at least 10 school days prior to any leave. Leave or travel over 10 days requires a different form; please contact Reception. If, during the period of leave, your child has assessments due they should also complete the Notification of Planned Absence form which is in the appendix of their student assessment handbook.
When your child needs to leave School early, please make sure they complete the following steps:
1. A written note signed from their parent/carer. This note can be made in the Student diary on the day of the planned absence, or on a separate piece of paper.
2. The student then takes the note to Homeroom and asks their Homeroom teachers to sign it.
3. The note must also be signed by a House Coordinator.
