Welcome back to Term 3 to our Trinity Community. It is wonderful to see all our students and staff again after a much needed mid-year break.
Firstly, please join me in welcoming to our community our new/returning staff starting this term:
- Mrs Helen Bladwell - Science Teacher
- Mr Zach Holmes - Science Coordinator (Starts Week 4)
- Mrs Lorraine Greig - French Teacher
- Mr Paul Zuchetto - Classroom Support Assistant
- Ms Kathy Eather - Classroom Support Assistant
Thank you to these staff for commencing or continuing their teaching and support vocations at Trinity. We are blessed to have you here.
We also welcome back Ms Anka Allen and Mrs Ruth Lewis who are returning from long service leave. Mrs Clare Cummins resumes her role as CAPA Coordinator and we take this opportunity to thank Miss Charlotte Lock again for her time and effort this year in the Acting CAPA Coordinator role.
SAFE TRAVELS: The College wishes Mrs McManus safe travels as she participates in a study trip and enjoys long service leave. Mrs McManus has already sent us many tantalising photos of her adventures, including outdoor art classes in the Assisi sun! We cannot wait for her return to the College and to hear more about her time abroad.
CONGRATULATIONS:The Trinity community welcomes Eden Reine Sheekey, daughter of Mrs Lorna Sheekey and her husband Robbie. Eden is a sister to Elijah and Emelia. Mrs Sheekey is on maternity leave for the remainder of 2019 and we wish the family all the best during this time of new life, little sleep and infinite blessings!
ENROLMENTS 2020: We are continuing to enrol for 2020. It is a lovely experience to sit with our incoming families and hear the reasons why Trinity is their preferred choice. We are developing a strong reputation for the care and attention that we pay to individual students and this is certainly something of which we can be proud.
CARING FOR YOUR CHILDREN: In relation to pastoral issues at our College, we continually endeavour to ensure that all pastoral issues are dealt with in a timely manner. We ask for the cooperation of our community in advising our House Coordinators should they believe there is an issue of fighting, bullying or harassment or if there is a welfare concern about a student in our care. We are effective in dealing with issues of which we are informed. I encourage everyone to keep open the lines of communication between home and school so that we can best support our students. We look forward to continuing our strong partnerships with our families; you are our greatest asset in helping us to meet the needs of our young people.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP 2020: We are coming to the end of the process of selecting our 2020 Student Leaders. Student leader positions are decided by a panel, taking into consideration the nomination details, student speeches, staff and student votes, interview process and suitability to the selection criteria. At our College Assembly on Wednesday 3 July 2019, we were treated to a plethora of passionate speeches from those leadership candidates. From being ‘rick rolled’ to hearing the wisdom of grandparents, the speeches were thoroughly entertaining and spoke to all about the strong connection our students feel to our College. Regardless of the outcome of the selection process, it is clear already that we have an impressive bunch of Year 11 students ready to take on the mantle of College leadership, with or without a badge.
ONLINE SAFETY: The NSW Police Force issued a powerful media statement in early July, urging parents and carers to monitor their child’s online activities after Strike Force Trawler charged four men in less than three weeks for illegal activities in relation to online interactions. The following is an extract from the media statement which can be found via the NSW Police Force’s social media pages:
“Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec, said parents need to speak with their children regularly about online safety.
“It’s important to speak to your child about the dangers associated with online conversations and know what your child is doing online,” Det Supt Kerlatec said.
“With children currently on school holidays, it’s a timely reminder to keep an eye on how much time your child is spending on the internet, what websites they are visiting, and who they may be speaking with.
“Not only should young people be very careful about providing personal information details to a person they only know in an online environment, they should never organise to meet as doing so may place them at further risk of harm.
“If they encounter something or someone they are not comfortable with, we encourage them to speak to someone they trust, who can then let our investigators know,” Det Supt Kerlatec said.
More information and educational packages for parents and children are available from ThinkUKnow, a multi-agency program designed to educate and promote cyber safety: https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/”
I urge you to keep abreast of your child’s online activities. Have open and frequent communication with your child about with whom and how they are interacting online and ensure they are using social media respectfully and responsibly. As a school community, we too are committed to ensuring our students are responsible online citizens, and cybersafety is a topic frequently covered in students’ pastoral lessons.
IT TAKES A LOT OF FAITH TO GET TO THE MOON
It was the evening of 20 July 1969 that the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle made its historic landing on the moon.
Less than seven hours later, on 21 July 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong took his famous "small step for [a] man" and "giant leap for mankind".
Minutes later, he was joined by Buzz Aldrin, a devout Christian who took a moment to give thanks to God by taking communion on the moon - the first man to celebrate the sacrament outside of planet Earth - and read from John 15:5, in which Jesus instructs his followers that he is the vine and they are the branches.
There are 5 faith facts about the moon landing:
- Aldrin took communion aboard the Eagle lunar lander.
- The “church of the astronauts” still celebrates Lunar Communion Sunday.
- The Pope blessed the Apollo 11 astronauts.
- There was an Apollo Prayer League who protected the astronauts as NASA was fighting a lawsuit after Apollo 8 crew who read the first chapter of the Book of Genesis in their Christmas radio transmission in 1968.
- Aldrin brought a scrap of scripture with him to the lunar surface as a full printed holy bible would have been too heavy.
Half a century on, we give thanks to God for the moon landing with the following prayer that has been shared widely on social media and speaks of the drive to "explore the mysteries of creation" and the need to cherish our world:
O God,
who made the universe and all that is in it
we thank you for the skills and talents
that enable us to explore the mysteries of creation.
Give us the will to cherish all that you have made,
and to use the riches of our own world
for the good of all,
through Jesus Christ our Lord
Amen

When your child needs to leave School early, please make sure they complete the following steps:
1. A written note signed from their parent/carer. This note can be made in the Student diary on the day of the planned absence, or on a separate piece of paper.
2. The student then takes the note to Homeroom and asks their Homeroom teachers to sign it.
3. The note must also be signed by a House Coordinator.
4. The student comes to the front office with their signed note.
5. Front office staff assist student to sign out.
6. Students wait for parent/carer to collect them.
Please note, parent or carer MUST present to the Office to collect student.
The College should be notified of any foreseen student leave. An Application for Exemption Form is available from the College Office and is required to be completed by parents/carers and returned to the College at least 10 school days prior to any leave. Leave or travel over 10 days requires a different form; please contact Reception. If, during the period of leave, your child has assessments due they should also complete the Notification of Planned Absence form which is in the appendix of their student assessment handbook.
