Dear Parents and/or Caregivers
ASH WEDNESDAY MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THE LENTEN SEASON
Yesterday marked the beginning of the Lenten season. The Gospel for Ash Wednesday gives us good advice on how we are to act during Lent. Jesus speaks of the three main actions of the Lenten season: giving alms, praying and fasting. All of these spiritual activities, Jesus teaches us, are to be done without any desire to be recognised by others. Each of the actions are to be done out of love of our neighbour, not in order to be seen by others. Through the season of Lent we are preparing for the Risen Christ at Easter. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The law of fasting binds those who have completed their eighteenth year until the beginning of their sixtieth year. The law of abstinence (no meat) binds those who have completed their fourteenth year. Please note meat will not be served in the Canteen on Fridays during Lent.
SHROVE TUESDAY
Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Day) is the day preceding Ash Wednesday. In most traditions, Shrove Tuesday is the day known for the eating of pancakes before the start of Lent. Pancakes are eaten as they are made of the main foods available: sugar, oil, flour and eggs. Generally, their consumption was traditionally restricted during the ritual fasting associated with Lent. Trinity celebrated Shrove Tuesday by sharing COVID-safe pancakes at breakfast in the Red Hall followed by the Annual Pancake Day Race around MET Quad. As always, a great community event. Thank you to Mr O’Connell and Gerard Teng, Youth Minister, for organising this fun and delicious activity for our community.
COLLEGE SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Thank you to our wonderful helpers at the swimming carnival last Friday. It was a team effort involving both staff and students. Thank you so much to Jasmine Wareham, Sports Coordinator, for her preparation and organisation of the carnival. Thank you to Goulburn Aquatic Centre staff for their assistance on the day; they were fantastic. Thank you to the Goulburn Swimming Club for allowing the use of their equipment. Congratulations to all the students on their participation in events and the fabulous community spirit. We have our Long Distance Swimming Carnival next Tuesday 23 February from 8.30am until about 12.00pm.
PARENT MEETINGS
We have had a number of parent meetings already this term including a Welcome BBQ for Year 7 families, an AGM for the Community Council, a Year 8 Accelerated Mathematics Information Evening, a Year 11 Information Evening and Year 12 Parent-Teacher Interviews. Each night had a magnificent roll up of parents. It is lovely engaging with families again face-to-face. For our Year 11 Information evening we trialed face-to-face as well as providing the opportunity for families to attend via ZOOM. Moving forward, we will continue to offer ZOOM and face-to-face meetings where we can.
WELCOME BBQ
We had an excellent turn out to welcome our new families last week. Thank you to our Community Council members, Angela Remington, Margot McKenzie and Rick Shipp for providing the hospitality. Thank you to Tess McKenzie (Year 11) and Chris Dyring (Year 11) for assisting with service. Thank you to Kristie Miners and Mark Carroll for their overall coordination of this event. Many families appreciated being able to meet the teachers. I am so appreciative that so many Trinity staff and families could be there to celebrate the new school year and welcome our new families. It was a wonderful community event.
COMMUNITY COUNCIL
Our Annual General Meeting for the Community Council took place prior to the Welcome BBQ. Congratulations to Angela Remington and Rick Shipp who were unanimously elected as Chair and Vice Chair. The Council meets once per term. The Trinity Catholic College Community Council members:
Parent Representatives: Angela Remington (mother of Bella Year 9 and Bobby Year 7), Rick Shipp (father of Bailey Year 10) and Chris Watts (father of Charlie Year 9 and Baxter Year 8).
Teacher Representative: Lorna Sheekey
Assistant Principal: Lauren Shinfield
Treasurer: Mark Carroll
Secretary: Kristie Miners
Parish Priest: Fr Joshy Kurien (ex-officio)
Principal: Gaye McManus (ex-officio)
We still need another parent representative so if you are interested please let me know. My thanks to each Council member as they undertake their governance responsibilities.
IMPROVED COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS
In better managing student conduct this year, we will continue to contact parents early in the process. If students are not following the positive behavior for learning classroom rules and reach Level 4 in one lesson, parents will be contacted. If students reach Level 4, they have been given three opportunities to change their behavior. Our goal this year is to ensure improvement in student learning which includes a focus on student engagement and student conduct. It is imperative that parents and the College work in partnership to ensure the best outcomes for our students.
CATHOLICCARE STUDENT AND FAMILY COUNSELLING SERVICE
We have two counsellors providing a counselling service to students and families this year. Peter Henry will be available for students each Thursday and Friday of term and Sylvia Townsend, our new counsellor, will be available for students each Tuesday of term. If students are under 14 years of age, parental consent will be required for students to access the counselling service.
Happy weekend when it arrives!
Yours in faith, strength and unity,
Gaye McManus
Principal
FRIENDLY REMINDER: IMMUNISATION FORMS DUE TOMORROW - FRIDAY 19 FEBRUARY!!
A friendly reminder that Vaccination forms for Year 7 and Year 10 are due back to the office tomorrow.
Thank you!
What a fantastic day for a Swimming Carnival ........
The first whole College carnival since this time last year.
It felt good to have the College together as a whole cheering the individuals who were competing either competitively or for participation points, because at the end of the day.... it's all about participation in our BIG 3 CARNIVALS.
With the swimming carnival points being tallied and the long distance carnival to go..... it could be anyone's win. Will McAuley take the win out again, or will another house come to claim this year's 2021 Swimming Carnival House Champion title? Stay tuned for more information in Week 5's edition of Trinity Talk.
We cannot disclose the information on the current leaders, however, we can share some amazing records that were broken at this year's carnival.....
