This article is written by Ashleigh Rock, a Year 8 Midgee member, and proud young Aboriginal woman.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC stands for National Aboriginal and Islanders Observance Day Committee which was formed in the 1920s as a way to bring wider awareness of Aboriginal cultures to Australia.
Recently some of the Midgee group attended the NAIDOC Mass and Awards at St Christopher’s Cathedral in Canberra.
Trinity was very lucky to have four award recipients this year;
Riley Knight - Year 12
Riley Weeks - Year 12
Mercedes Jacobs - Year 12
Mrs Beverly McGreevy - Teacher
The day started with us waiting at the bus stop. Mrs McGreevy arrived with another teacher, Mr Groves, who was the bus driver, in a Trinity bus. We all hopped in and we put on our seat belts and headed off to St Christopher’s Cathedral in Canberra. It was an hour’s drive but my friend Hayley and I just passed the time by talking. When we arrived at St Christopher’s Cathedral, some schools were already there. While we waited for the other schools to arrive, I saw my old primary school, Good Shepherd come. We entered the Cathedral through a smoking ceremony. As soon as we walked in, we saw beautiful statues, candles everywhere and large stained-glass windows. Towards the end of the Mass, Mrs McGreevy, Mercedes Jacobs, Riley Weeks and Ryley Knight all received awards.
After the Mass, we got back in the bus and drove to the National Gallery of Australia. At the National Gallery, we walked around and looked at the art works. My favourite art work was the Aboriginal art work, ‘The Forest.’ Midgee spent an hour looking at the wonderful art works and then we went to McDonalds!
We had a good day, celebrating NAIDOC Week, honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples, art and cultures, and having fun. The day ended with my catching my school bus home to tell my parents about my adventures.
Earlier this week Year 7 Art Attack created a colourful, collaborative public art piece in the College quad, inspired by their current focus artist, Keith Haring. Art Attack students have been studying the work of Haring; learning about his use of simple figures, shape, bold colour, pattern and contrast and incorporating this into their own works. We have also been discussing ‘public art’ and how it broadens the audience of artworks. Students shared public art pieces that they had seen with the rest of the class, which included many of the local pieces in Goulburn. In creating this piece, Year 7 students were able to apply what they’d learnt in the classroom and it opened up a discussion of how artworks can be perceived differently by people. The kids had a ball creating this. Keep an eye out for more artworks, from our awesome bunch of budding artists.
