ST MARY MACKILLOP FEAST DAY
Yesterday was the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia’s first beatified saint.
St Mary MacKillop was a hard worker who put the needs of others before her own needs. She epitomised the larrikin spirit as she was constantly in dispute with authorities but pressed on, regardless. She used the strengths of others but also did not tolerate those who were not genuine. Her commitment to the schooling of children from poor and rural communities established a model of Catholic education that continues today. St Mary of the Cross is patron of our MacKillop House. There are so many wonderful quotes attributed to St Mary of the Cross MacKillop but I will leave this simple one with you as it speaks to our College motto of Faith, Strength and Unity:
So great is the strength we possess in our unity. (1874)
FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION
Tomorrow we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption where we recognise Mary’s body ascending into heaven at the end of her earthly life. Each of us are called to be the best we can be as people of God. Mary, mother of Jesus, is a wonderful role model for all people. She represents unconditional love and compassion as well as unconditional commitment to be brave and courageous. This courage needs to be there in our everyday actions whether we are in the classroom, at home, on the sport field or facing the burdens in our life. And this courage is needed in COVID times. It is an opportunity for us to remember the good fortune we have in our lives but at the same time keeping in our hearts the struggle of families who are confronted by violence and war in their homes, and in particular, our Sydney friends who are struggling under the enormous burden of the latest coronavirus variant. Whilst this Feast is a holy day of obligation, Year 7 only will attend Mass in the Chapel.
PRAY FOR OUR YEAR 12 STUDENTS
Our Year 12 students commenced their Trial HSC Examinations this week. Please keep them in your prayers during this time and over their final weeks of secondary schooling. It is an especially important term as it is their final one. They have been a magnificent group of young people to work with and they have displayed remarkable resilience and adaptability managing the various changes and uncertainty COVID has brought this term (and last year). Keep on going, Year 12!
Yours in faith, strength and unity
Principal
A prayer to take on fresh courage with empowering love
Holy Spirit working among us
fill us with gratitude for education
and with appreciation of those in the teaching ministry
who empower our communities.
Calm us in this time of pandemic
to be supportive of children, young people and teachers
negotiating the new realities of this time.
Strengthen the commitment of governments,
churches and institutions
to the goal of universal education in our world.
Encourage us to take advantage of opportunities
for learning through all our lives.
And bless us with critical minds, grateful hearts
and willing hands to do our bit.
We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ
the way, the truth and the life.
Amen

SPECIAL REPORT: Instilling Hope In Uncertain Times
Although life is always filled with uncertainty, the levels we are currently experiencing are unprecedented and it is becoming evident that this is taking a toll on our young people. The most recent research from Mission Australia makes clear the breadth and depth the pandemic is having on our youth across the nation.
It appears that lockdowns and tighter restrictions will be with us for some time, but it is important in such times of uncertainty to instil hope and remain optimistic. Adult carers can play a vital role in helping young people reframe their worries, encouraging them to see life as it is and getting them to focus more on the things they can control, rather than those they can’t.
It’s important young people remain connected with their social networks during these times as often their natural response to uncertainty is to exhibit varying degrees of fear and anxiety. With the continued disruptions, mental health concerns are on the rise and it is evident that many students may need some extra support to achieve their goals. Parents can help their kids focus more on the good things in their life, rather than fill in the blanks with catastrophic narratives.
This Special Report outlines how adult carers can help instil hope and offer support in such times of uncertainty. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If this Special Report raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.

A reminder that year 10 Work Experience is during Week 9 of Term 4 unless special approval has been signed off by Mrs Dillon for an alternative date.
In order to undertake work experience students MUST:
- Have had the 'self-sourced workplace learning' form signed off and returned to school (after which they receive the next form).
- Have the 'Workplace learning record' form signed off by the employer, the parent, the school and the Catholic education Office where needed - those wanting to undertake high-risk work such as work with animals (Mrs Dillon will send it in these cases). If students are going to the hospital for work experience they may go straight to this form and skip the 'self-sourced workplace learning' form as it is not a self-sourced placement.
- Students then must complete their workplace readiness modules and email Mrs Dillon their certificates of completion at rebecca.dillon@cg.catholic.edu.au
- Students will be given a pack with items such as a letter to the employer, a thank you card to give them, a copy of our liability insurance certificate, an in-case-of-emergency contact card and other necessary paperwork.
We will be working with students at school to prepare them for work experience between now and week 9 of term 4. Any student who has regularly failed to demonstrate appropriate behaviours at school may be denied the privilege of work experience.
Please refer to the work experience manuals distributed to students at school during term 2, or email Mrs Dillon with any questions or concerns.
If students are displaying flu-like symptoms at school, parents will be required to collect their child from school and have a COVID test. If students are unwell, they must remain at home. Please continue to inform the school via phone if your child tests positive for COVID.
